Back to Prinsenplein: cultural exchange with the Caribbean

Back to Prinsenplein: cultural exchange with the Caribbean

In the autumn of 2024, poet and theatre maker Gershwin Bonevacia and Podium Mozaïek travelled with their performance Back to Prinsenplein to Curaçao, Bonaire, and Suriname. The journey to Curaçao was made possible with the support of the Corendon Foundation.

After a successful tour in the Netherlands, the idea arose to also bring the performance to the Caribbean and Suriname. The themes Gershwin highlights – identity, oppression, and the power of culture and community – closely resonate with the experiences within Caribbean and Surinamese communities. The tour also provided a valuable opportunity to deepen cultural connections and initiate new collaborations.

In Curaçao, Gershwin and Podium Mozaïek collaborated with Teatro KadaKen and Teatro Bulabanda. In cooperation with the Secondary Technical School (MTS), an educational project was developed in which students designed and built the set for the performance at theater Aula Habaai. In October 2024, three school performances and one evening performance took place there. All shows were sold out, and the audience responded with great enthusiasm.

After the stay in Curaçao, the group continued their journey to Bonaire and Suriname. The encounters with local communities, young people, and cultural organizations provided valuable exchanges. As a result, new connections were established between artists and institutions from the Netherlands, the Caribbean, and Suriname.

Gershwin Bonevacia:

“We did not only perform shows, but also created spiritual and cultural connections. This tour brought me closer to my roots and gave new depth to my artistry.”
The Corendon Foundation looks back with pride on this special cultural journey and collaboration.
